Paris Portrait Photoshoot, or How to Become the Lead in Your Own Film

There is a particular kind of magic Paris performs, and most travelers miss it because they are searching for it in the wrong places. It does not live only in the monuments. It lives in the way this city takes the most ordinary moment, a woman in a yellow dress eating a bowl of ice cream on a slow afternoon, and quietly turns it into a painting. That is the whole idea behind this Paris cafe photoshoot, made at Au Clairon des Chasseurs, the deep blue cafe on Place du Tertre in the heart of Montmartre. I have photographed grand proposals and glittering weddings all over this city, and still, a Paris cafe photoshoot remains one of the most quietly moving things I get to do, because it finds the beauty that was already there and simply refuses to let it pass unnoticed. You do not need an occasion. You do not need a reason. You only need a sunny table, something sweet, and a willingness to let Paris show off a little. That is the gentle promise of a Paris cafe photoshoot: the smallest afternoon, made unforgettable.

Nothing dramatic happens in these frames. She sits, she smiles, she lifts a spoonful of whipped cream and laughs at how tall the sundae is. And yet a cafe photoshoot in Paris turns exactly that kind of small, happy, unremarkable minute into something you will want to frame on a wall. That is not my doing. That is Paris. I just make sure the camera is there when the city works its trick.

How a bowl of ice cream becomes a painting

Let me show you what is actually happening in these pictures, because there is real craft hiding inside the joy. The first gift is the color. That famous deep blue facade of Au Clairon des Chasseurs is the perfect foil for her sunny yellow floral set, blue and gold sitting opposite each other on the color wheel, so she seems to glow right off the wall. A Paris cafe photoshoot lives and dies on a backdrop like this, and Montmartre handed us one of the best in the city for free.

Then there is the sundae itself, a tall swirl of white cream that becomes the brightest point in the frame and pulls your eye straight to her hands and her face. I shot low and close so the little blue bistro table, the water glasses, and the wicker chair layered into a real Parisian scene rather than a flat portrait. And I never asked her to hold a smile. I asked her to actually eat, actually taste, actually enjoy, and I waited for the real reactions in between. The best frame in any cafe photoshoot in Paris is the one that arrives half a second after the person forgets the camera and simply delights in where they are.

The square where everything is already art

Here is the part that gives this Paris cafe photoshoot its soul, and it is the reason the location matters so much. Look closely at the wall behind her and you will see it: the black cat of the Chat Noir. That image, Steinlen’s Tournee du Chat Noir, was painted in 1896 as nothing more than an advertisement, a poster to promote a touring cabaret show. Today it hangs in museums and it is one of the most recognized artworks in the world. An ad became a masterpiece. That is Montmartre in a single picture.

Because this cafe sits on Place du Tertre, the old beating heart of the Montmartre artists’ quarter, where for well over a century painters and portraitists have set up their easels every single day and turned passing strangers into art on the spot. Up the hill, the white domes of the Sacre-Coeur watch over all of it. On this square the line between everyday life and fine art was rubbed out long ago. The painters make art of tourists. A humble poster became a treasure. And a woman with a coupe of ice cream becomes a painting too. A cafe photoshoot in Paris, right here, is simply the newest version of the oldest thing this square has ever done.

On Place du Tertre, nobody waits for a special occasion to turn a life into art. Not the painters, not the poster on the wall, and not me.

A little guide to Au Clairon des Chasseurs

Because so many of you will want to sit exactly where she sat, here is everything worth knowing about the cafe before you go. Au Clairon des Chasseurs is a classic Parisian brasserie wrapped in that unmistakable deep blue, famous less for its kitchen than for its front-row seat on the most artistic square in Paris. Inside there are frescoes and a pretty glass roof, and most evenings live jazz drifts across the terrace, gypsy-style Jazz Manouche toward the weekend. It is a see-and-be-seen terrace where part of what you pay for is the view, so go for the atmosphere and the people-watching first. It is one of my favorite backdrops for a Paris cafe photoshoot for exactly that reason.

  • Address: 3 Place du Tertre, 75018 Paris, in Montmartre, a two-minute walk from the Sacre-Coeur.
  • Getting there: Metro to Abbesses or Anvers, then a short uphill walk, or take the little Montmartre funicular and stroll over.
  • Best for: a coffee, a coupe of ice cream, a cocktail, or a croque monsieur while you watch the painters work the square.
  • Music: live jazz on many evenings, with Jazz Manouche often toward the weekend, which makes for a wonderful late sitting.
  • Good to know: this is prime Place du Tertre real estate, so prices run higher than a quiet neighborhood cafe, and the terrace is busiest midday. Come earlier for calmer light and a calmer table.

One honest note, because I would tell a friend the same thing: opening hours, the current menu, and prices change with the seasons, so check the cafe’s official site or give them a quick call before you plan your visit around it. For a Paris cafe photoshoot I almost always suggest arriving in the softer morning light, when the square is still stretching awake, the terrace is nearly yours, and the blue facade glows without a crowd in every frame.

Why a cafe is the most Parisian place to be photographed

Grand landmarks are wonderful, but a cafe is where Paris actually lives, and it is often where my favorite portraits happen. Something in people softens the moment there is a table in front of them and something delicious on it. Hands that never know what to do in an open square suddenly have a spoon, a glass, a reason to move. A cafe photoshoot in Paris gives shy travelers the kindest possible prop: a real, small pleasure to sink into while I quietly work around them. That is the quiet secret of a good cafe photoshoot in Paris.

So if you are visiting and the idea of posing terrifies you, this is the session I gently steer you toward. We order the thing you actually want, we let the jazz and the painters and the blue walls do half the work, and I catch you in the middle of a genuinely good afternoon. You can see how I photograph travelers all across the city on my Paris vacation photography page, and we can build your session around the cafes and corners that feel most like your Paris.

Take the Magic of a Paris Cafe Photoshoot Home

Years from now the trip will blur, the way trips do. You will not quite remember the museum queue or the price of the sundae. But you will open this one photograph, the yellow dress, the blue wall, the black cat watching over your shoulder, and the whole warm, sugary, sunlit afternoon will come rushing back. A Paris cafe photoshoot is simply the easiest, sweetest way to bottle a feeling like that. That is what Paris does, and it is the entire reason I do this work. If you would like an afternoon like hers turned into art you get to keep, come find me and my Paris vacation photography, and let us make your own small masterpiece on a Montmartre terrace. Bring your appetite. Paris will bring the magic.
